  Instructions to Students and Teachers

In this lesson teachers are leading their students into the realities that the mind is the con-joint Creator and origin of matter and that the shadowy material world is the time space shining of the Paradise Deities, that all life initiates in spirit, is organized in mind, and manifests in matter. The purpose of this lesson is to bring the student to the reality experience of co-creation with God. To become fully aware of the creative processes of the minds ability to liberate itself in mind realities, and better organize itself in the subjective realities of shared experience with the indwelling seven-fold spirit endowments on the material classroom worlds of space. To better understand how to use the past to guide the present and future and a fuller understanding of this truth.

2:1.5 No thing is new to God, and no cosmic event ever comes as a surprise; he inhabits the circle of eternity. He is without beginning or end of days. To God there is no past, present, or future; all time is present at any given moment. He is the great and only I AM

Instilling undying hope in the minds of their students that they can achieve triune balance between the material - mindal and spiritual elements of character and personality development, by subjecting the will of the student to the spirit of the Father the true inner teacher of the soul.

UNIT 5: YOUR PSYCHIC POTENTIAL

Sooner or later there comes a time in every thinking person's life when they become mildly curious about extrasensory perception, or "ESP" as it is commonly called. Most people have had experiences of picking up on another's thoughts or having hunches about what would happen.

In fact, a study done in a Los Angeles university showed that more than a half of Americans have had some type of psychic experience, at least once in their lives. Haven't you? If you stop and think for a moment, chances are you will remember your experience. It may have seemed so normal at the time that you hardly noticed it. Try to remember -- haven't you had the experience of knowing who is on the other end of the telephone before you answered, or knowing that someone was going to visit you whom you wouldn't normally expect to see.

Write down two examples:

1.. THE POOL OF TIME

Once it is realized that space and time are only meaningful in the coarse physical dimension, there is no problem grasping the concept of supernatural reality or psychic force manifestations.

Remember the Human Mind chart showed us that it is when we are operating on computer (beta) logic that we are aware of time passing and our surroundings. Once we relax into the alpha range, space and time of day are quite meaningless. This happens when we are daydreaming or have a reverie and are "gone" for a few minutes.

Everyone has had this experience while doing a mechanical job like washing the dishes or shaving .... or while riding on a train or bus. During sleep, coma or when one is anesthetized for surgery are other instances of when the mind has no awareness of the time -space dimension. Patients waking up in the recovery room after surgery sometimes ask when they are going to have their operation and are quite incredulous when told it is all over.

In Jacob's Ladder we think of time as being rather like a pool of still water. Events - emotional events that is, are like pebbles being thrown in to make circles in the pool of time. A small emotional event makes a few ripples, while a really big emotional event makes waves of disturbance. The sinking of the Titanic is a good example of this. It is also important to recognize that our emotions are our reactions to our social and economic experiences.

Appealing to the emotions or the intellect are futile in all real relationship values and meanings. We must address the spirit indweller and higher mind in all our associations with our brothers and sisters and this is the best approach to the super minded activities and creative abilities of those who truly know God.

2. PRECOGNITION

MORGAN ROBERTSON

This is how we explain precognition: (knowing about something before it happens). Remembering that only God Knows all Things Past - Present or Future. All Spiritual Teachers and Leaders Prophets and Watchers gain access to this foresight that comes from communion with our Maker. Often foreknowledge of probable events is given to warn of peril ahead if the course of the individual or civilization is not changed. The Angels assigned our watchcare knowing our Maker just a little better than man is often the source of this foreknowledge. as they are allowed all activities that do not infringe upon our free will, and here it is important to gain a trusting relationship with these divine ministers as they will not impose upon our liberty of choice unless we before hand have given them authority to act on our behalf. and in a manner consistent with the universal laws of there ministry.

Forewarnings have come and been recorded in spiritual writings throughout the history of this world. However, religion must be always safeguarded by common sense. Many other warnings in industry and the normal everyday activities of individuals and groups around the world and wherever man strives have been saved by a forewarning of impending disaster and inspired by an advanced philosophy of universal realities.

Perhaps the most well authenticated story in this category of foreknowledge on our world concerns the sinking of the Titanic, years ago. Anyone who saw the film "A Night to Remember" about the sinking of the Titanic, will remember the prologue telling how Morgan Robertson, in his book Futility published in 1898, foretold the disaster which was not to occur in "time" until 14 years later.

It began in the year 1898. In a small room in New York City, a man named Morgan Robertson was sitting in front of a typewriter.

He had spent a good part of his life as a sailor and he was a writer of, stories about the sea. He already had several books to his credit, but now, for some reason, the words wouldn't come.

Robertson recognized this feeling and knew he would have to wait until the mood" would come upon him as it had done in the past. He leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling. He could feel himself far at sea now, and he could hear the waves. He began to see pictures in his mind, as if he was watching a movie.

He saw a beautiful luxury liner, the largest he had ever seen, with more people moving about on her broad decks than had ever sailed on one ship before. The liner moved by and on her side, he could see the words: The TITAN. The word unsinkable came to him as he fearfully counted the lifeboats. There were 24, far too few for the number of passengers aboard. Just ahead, barely visible in the thick fog he saw part of an iceberg looming above the surface of the water.

Morgan Robertson began to write his book Futility, unknowingly foretelling of a disaster which was not to occur in "time" until 14 years later.

A coincidence you might say.

Before dismissing this as a "coincidence " the metaphysician would look at what we call the Mean Chance Expectation, or the "odds" involved. This is a basic word in parapsychology. MCE is a statistical method of measuring whether an incident is coincidental.

In Robertson's book, he speaks of the tonnage displacement of a mighty, mythical ship. He gives the approximate number of crew and passengers. He states the ship is on her maiden voyage and gives the manner of its destruction. He even calls his ship the "Titan".

The Mean Chance Expectation of so many details being coincidental is mathematically incredible, which makes the story an authenticated instance of precognition.

In this course of study we try to understand some of the laws governing precognition, and the answer always comes up, the degree of emotional splash the event will create in the fabric of A small incident, like meeting an old friend, might be dreamt of one or two days before the event, whereas the assassination of President Kennedy was predicted over a year ahead of the actual event.

Precognition (Titanic)

Postcognition (Versailles)

POSTCOGNITION

 BACK IN TIME TO VERSAILLES

Postcognition, or seeing back into time, follows the same basic rule as precognition.

A huge outpouring of emotional energy in a given location seems to leave its mark in the physical dimension and sometimes people inadvertently stumble into these ripples and experience events long since past.

One of the best authenticated instances of postcognition took place near Versailles in France in the early nineteen hundred and again, after extensive research for verification, was published in book form. It concerned Misses Jourdain and Moberley, two schoolteachers of spotless reputation who went to Versailles on holiday. On their first day they decided to visit the house where Marie Antoinette had lived. As they walked through the extensive grounds leading to the palace, the atmosphere seemed to change .... There was a strange stillness in the air and the landscape looked almost like a theatre set. They turned a corner in the path, they noted two gardeners in gold and green livery walking beside a kiosk, and farther on, a woman sat at an easel working on an oil painting, and other people were walking among the flower beds. The palace had a side door with a staircase leading up to the side entrance. Misses Moberley and Jourdain, both trained to be keen observers, took in every detail of the scene without either saying a word.

When they got back to their hotel, they had supper and settled down for a relaxing evening. After a long period of silence, one timidly asked the other if she had noticed anything "odd" about their after-noon excursion. Once the conversational ice was broken, they both admitted a most peculiar feeling. Then they wrote down every detail (being careful not to consult each other) and compared notes.

Next time they returned to the same place only to find everything quite different, the path down which they had walked was different There was no kiosk, no livened workers, no woman painter and no side steps to the upper floor of the palace.

From this point on the ladies began an intensive investigation and uncovered eight other witnesses to the phenomena, one of them a prominent lawyer. By checking through the archives, they were able to ascertain facts about the uniforms worn by Marie Antoinette's

personal staff and it was the same as that worn by the workers the ladies had seen. It was also proven that a side staircase had been removed during remodeling, 100 years previously.

Imagine the terrific emotional energy released in France at the time of the French Revolution. This emotion, as in the example of the Titanic, would account for the focus of energy surrounding the Queen's summer home.

Here is another example of post-cognition, from one of our books Psychic Phenomena in Canada.

"It was during the Summer of 1921. We had just been married in England and had come to live in British Columbia. My husband was working for a Captain Schofield at Fosthall, on the west side of Upper Narrow Lake, nine miles by water from the little town of Naksup.

"We were allotted a small four roomed bungalow about a quarter of a mile up the hill from Captain Schofield's own little house on the shore of the lake. Our shack, for that is all it really was, was situated on the edge of a rectangular clearing, big enough for two or three tennis courts in size. I often wondered why such a clearing should exist in such a spot.

"Behind us a ninety-foot waterfall gave continuous background music with its soothing roar of falling water.

"One bright sunny day, I sat knitting on my doorstep, the steel needles flashing in and out. All was quiet and peaceful. Two dogs and a cat were asleep beside me. Suddenly I heard a low growl and looked up to see the clearing full of teepees. Indian women were cooking at open fires, with dusky children tumbling about between them. Braves in feathered headdresses gathered nearby, stared intently, taking in every detail of the scene, till gradually the picture faded away. I looked down to see all three animals with backs arched and fur upraised.

"Prior to this I had already seen a flittering grey wraith of a woman go by on several occasions. I saw her up the hill beside our home.

"One night, when we were having supper with the "Boss," we were sitting on his veranda in the dusk and she passed down the path in front of us. Captain Schofield leaned forward and quietly said to me - "So, you see her too!" "My husband was completely mystified and asked? What on earth are you two talking about?"' "I might add that we were completely isolated at Fosthall. The only other inhabitant was a bachelor named Hudson.

The lake steamer only came once a week. Had anyone visited us in the motorboat we would have known about it long before their arrival. Some time after the incident described I found out that the word "Fosthall' means CAMP BY THE WATERFALL!!

SCIENCE AND PSYCHIC PHENOMENA

From the irrelevance of time and space, it seems logical to go onto the "facts of the matter." The relationships of matter to energy was mathematically proven by Einstein in his formula

E = MC² E equals MC squared.

Years ago, before Einstein's work on relativity, scientists believed that matter was separate from energy. They could react with one another, but it was believed that they were not related.

Einstein's theory states simply that: E = MC² E equal MC squared.

Energy is equal to mass or matter times the speed of light (the constant) squared or times the speed of light again

In other words, energy is just speeded up matter, or matter is energy which has been slowed down. "Star Trek", a popular science fiction series on television, used this concept to transport people and supplies from one place to the other.

But there were no transporters in Houdini's time

THE MAGIC OF HOUDINI

When Doctor and Author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was first investigating psychic phenomena to decide whether it was mere "hallucination," one of his most astounding discoveries was something we call "apports," various objects which seemed to materialize out of thin air, often appearing in locked rooms where there was no physical way in which they could enter.

Doyle was well acquainted with the great "magician" Houdini, and in his book The Edge of the Unknown, tells of his conviction that Houdini could actually dematerialize and materialize in another place. Here are two examples which Doyle witnessed.

1. "The box was made of inch planking, tongue and grooved, with double thickness at the ends. It was nailed herring-bone fashion, three-inch nails, three inches apart. Several auger holes were made at one end to admit air, and the whole thing was carefully and solidly finished. It was, as I have said, a challenge box, yet we thoroughly over-hauled it and were satisfied that it contained no tricks.

"Houdini lay down in it, while the challengers climbed to the platform and nailed down the heavy top again, using three-inch nails as before. The box was then tightly roped, three men pulling on the cords. Meanwhile, Houdini inside the box called out that it was very hot, and putting a finger through an air-hole, waggled it furiously. The box was then enclosed by a tent consisting of brass rods covered by a silken canopy.

"In ninety-five seconds, Houdini was standing before his audience, breathless, and with his shirt in tatters. The boxmakers after careful examination, in which we joined, declared that both box and roping were intact."

2. "A small iron tank filled with water was deposited on the stage, and in it Houdini was placed, the water completely covering his body. Over this was placed an iron lid with three hasps and staples, and these were securely locked. The body was then completely dematerialized within this tank in one and a half minutes, while the author stood immediately over

it. Without disturbing any of the locks Houdini was transferred from the tank direct to the back of the stage front, dripping with water and attired in the blue jersey-suit in which he had entered the tank. From the time that he entered it to the time that he came to the front one and a half minutes had elapsed.

"While the author stood near the tank during the de-materialization process a great loss of physical energy was felt by him such as is usually felt by sitters in materializing séances who have a good stock of vital energy as in such phenomena a large amount of energy is required ....

"This startling manifestation of one of nature's pro-profoundest miracles was probably regarded by most of the audience as "a very clever trick."

Houdini himself once told Sir Arthur that he was powerless until "the little voice" told him to "go ahead."

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

For more than 5,000 years, since earliest recorded history and probably before, the human race has respected its psychics and sought their advice on matters of vital importance. No Babylonian king would think of going into battle without first consulting his "seer", and all major decisions affecting politics were based on psychic predictions.

Our Bible, which remains one of the world's most influential works, was largely compiled by the prophets - people who looked beyond the material sphere and spoke words of heavenly wisdom. The ancient Greeks and Romans, who called their early prophets "gods" based their civilizations on ethics received from clairvoyants (those of clear-vision) - and the evolution of our own Social System traces its root to these influences.

There is nothing unnatural about extrasensory perception. Nothing more that is, than there was about electricity in the days when oil and candles were the popular form of illumination, or coloured T.V. shows were in the lantern-slide era. They were simply part of an unknown world. Much of this unseen world has ceased to be uncanny simply because we have become familiar with it and now consider it a part of normal existence.

But even now, as we accept new ideas which were inconceivable to science a few decades ago, so we are on the threshold of a far larger concept of reality.

Man's discoveries of force fields, radiation, and electronics do not indicate that he has reached the limits of the unseen world, but rather how little we know of its expanse.

There is no denying that the very air we breathe is charged with radio waves. We pick up these radio waves with the instruments we have manufactured.

WHY THEN SHOULD OUR ATMOSPHERE NOT BE CHARGED WITH WAVES OF THOUGHT AND EMOTION, CAPABLE OF BEING PICKED UP WITH THE INSTRUMENTS OF OUR HUMAN INHERITANCE?

There are thousands of well documented stories like the ones we have used in this lesson, all pointing to the fact that man is a multidimensional creature living in a universe governed by some kind of Creative Intelligence and Spiritual Laws.

Through the gift of understanding we learn about Universal Law, and live by it, to gain the best of two worlds - the physical and the spiritual. -

SUPPLEMENTARY READING

The lesson on psychic phenomena begins our journey from the realm of the known, concrete world, to situations and events that cannot be explained according to simple laws of cause and effect. We begin to discover that we are indeed a multi-dimensional being, capable of experiencing a far wider spectrum of reality than the one to which we are accustomed.

Many fascinating phenomena are occurring around the world and are being publicized. One can study them as interesting examples. Or we can see how each fits into the total picture, coming from different directions into the hub of understanding that is Applied Metaphysics.

Let's examine the world of miracles.

ROSEMARY BROWN

We'll first look at a little old lady called Rosemary Brown, a widow in her forties - so poor she didn't even have a radio until 1965. She has amazed musical circles by creating 500 compositions in the exact styles of masters such as Liszt, Chopin, Schubert, Beethoven, Debussy and Rachmaninoff. She had very little formal training, just barely being able to plunk out a Sunday hymn on the piano. Although Rachmaninoff has been giving her lessons, she still cannot play many of the pieces she writes. She claims she simply copies them down like a stenographer.

Rosemary is described as a simple woman - totally charming and sincere. She describes how, being a widow with two children to support, she didn't have much time for music or composing. But in 1964 she had an accident and was laid up for some weeks. It was at this time that Liszt came to visit her. She explains that she was psychic from childhood and could often see and hear things others could not.

When she was seven, she saw a spirit with white flowing hair who said

one day he would make her a famous musician. In her teens she saw

a picture of Liszt and recognized him as the same spirit.

After Liszt, came a whole procession of composers, each a distinct personality.

How is the music conveyed? Liszt began by simply guiding her hands at the piano - rather like automatic writing - as if someone put her hands-on like gloves and then played through them. Later, he began dictating the music.

What do these beings look like, Rosemary is asked? "At times I see them very clearly - as if they were here in this dimension. Sometimes the vision is blurred or fades and the same with the voices," she says. She believes the reason for the mediumship is to show proper evidence for life after death. The composers have stated that this is so - that their goal is to assure the world of their survival, rather than add to their body of music. They are quite satisfied with their degree of success - that human consciousness is opening up - young people are asking questions and not being satisfied with just a material life.

URI GELLER

Then there is Uri Geller (Uri means "circle of light"). He is a widely publicized Israeli who can bend objects such as keys and forks and has performed his feats before thousands of people. He became aware of his psychic abilities at seven when he discovered he could move the hands of his wristwatch - by looking at it. Later, the wristband bent and broke. He believes the power is channeled through him and is of a higher force and intelligence. When asked why, he says he believes he is being prepared for some other work -perhaps in some other place not necessarily on this earth. He believes his life is being guided and looked over, though not planned.

When asked if he saw any pattern emerging for the future, he said, "I think that in three years something enormous is going to happen, something very big, it will involve something outside of our planet, though still connected with it

When asked if he meant extraterrestrial contact, he said, "Yes, but very heavily this time. However, it will depend on whether we -mankind - are prepared for it. This interview was published in Psychic Magazine, June 1973.

Now let's look at the story of an unusual painting as described from a newspaper article by Allan Spraggett.

THE MYSTERY PORTRAIT

Hanging above the main altar of the Roman Catholic Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is a much-venerated painting of the Virgin Mary.

Many of the faithful believe that this portrait - which depicts the Virgin in flowing blue-green robes, her dark hair parted in the middle, her hands folded prayerfully - was produced by a miracle.

The traditional story is that on December 12, 1531, the Virgin appeared in a vision to a 57 - year old Aztec Indian named Juan Diego and bade him tell the local bishop of her visit. Diego, so the story has it, went to see Bishop Zummaraga, the prelate in Mexico at that time, and in his presence the portrait of the Virgin miraculously appears.

The painting is strange in several ways.

For one thing, it is not on canvas but on a material made of loosely woven cactus fibres. This originally was the cloak which Diego was wearing when the Virgin appeared to him, says the story.

Cactus fiber is said normally to disintegrate in 20 years, but the painting has remained intact and vivid for more than three centuries.

Bishop Zummaraga testified that the portrait appeared suddenly in his presence, without human hands, or paint, or a brush touching Juan Diego's cloak. Close examination of the painting it's said, indicates that there are no visible brushstrokes. Rather the picture appears to have been produced by some sort of chemical wash, as modern photographs are.

The Catholic Church is cautious about certifying any potentially embarrassing "miracle," and no doubt there are Catholics who are as skeptical about the portrait as anybody else might be.

However, in recent years church authorities have permitted a new claim to be made for the portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe - one supported by scientific testimony.

The claim concerns the eyes of the portrait.

It started in 1929, when a photographer, Alfonso Gonzales, while ex-examining photographic negatives of the portrait, noticed very tiny images in the Virgin's eyes. He mentioned his discovery to the church authorities who forbade him to speak of it publicly until further study was made.

Then, in 1955, another photographer, Carlos Salinas, made the same observation. In the portrait's eyes, he said, minute images were visible. When enlarged the images proved to be of three human faces.

When photographs of the tiny images were greatly enlarged, one of them was identified from a contemporary painting as Juan Diego, the Aztec to whom the Virgin is said to have appeared. The second face was identified as that of Juan Gonzales, the man who interpreted for Diego when he reported to Bishop Zummaraga. The third face hasn't been identified.

The church authorities asked experts to subject the painting to exacting scrutiny.

On May 26, 1956, Dr. Javier Toroello Bueno, an ophthalmologist, reported the results of his examination. The images in the eyes of the portrait, he said were situated as they would be in normal eyes, even showing the slight distortion arising from the curvature of the cornea.

Two months later; on July 26, another eye specialist, Dr. Rafael Torija Lavoignet, gave similar testimony. He said that by moving the light of his ophthalmoscope around the eye of the portrait he found that it appeared to have the same depth as a normal eye. "Yet" he added, "it is impossible to obtain such a reflection from a flat, and what is more, dark surface."

There have been Spiritualist claims that psychic paintings have been precipitated out of thin air in a manner similar to that claimed for the portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Examination of paintings of Lincoln and Napoleon, at Lillydale Spiritualist Camp near Buffalo, indicate no visible brushstrokes although they were produced long before the age of the airbrush.

Do these paintings and the portrait of the Virgin share the same mystery?

Your textbook [1] Perfect Health gives some more examples in Chapter VI, the "Miracle Workers." It also gives examples of other kinds of miracles - about people who can "see" colours without using the use of their visual sense, and others who can move objects without touching them in any way. There are stories of levitation, stigmata and psychic surgery in the chapter as well.

It is interesting to note that these miracles occur to the quiet ones of earth the meek, the unassuming - the ones open to spiritual suggestion. We are in the process of learning this openness, shedding preconceived ideas, and finding we are part of a living whole. Participation in miracles is part of our heritage. Letting it be,

allowing them to happen, getting the focus off self and onto a Greater Reality is where it's at.

When this course was taught at a residential school, daily miracles began to reveal themselves to the participants. On the day of the Miracles Lesson, it was decided to hold the class outside, it being a glorious gold and red-bronzed autumn morning - the sun streaming in through the tall trees. The students sat in a circle in front of the Chapel and discussed the miracles that had occurred in their lives. When it was time for the teacher to begin, the lesson, a perfect, brilliant maple leaf wafted down from the sky and softly landed right in her hand at the moment she was about to speak.

The emotion that ensued a quiet. happy awe, was the perfect note with which to begin a lesson on miracles.

After all, what is a miracle? The word miracle comes from the Latin "mirare," which means "to wonder at." "A person, thing, or event that excites admiring awe" is a dictionary definition of a miracle. It is also described as "an event that appears unexplainably by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural or an act of God)'

A miracle can be as quiet as the falling of a leaf, or as dramatic as a life being saved. It is our own expanse of conscious awareness that permits us to experience the reality of miracles. Almost all of these so-called miraculous events are the outworking of universe laws beyond the comprehension of mans present ability to understand the true nature of things.

One such miracle in religious history is the appearing of the wine in the vessels of a long ago marriage This is the true story about that event

 From the Urantia Revelations

  • 137:4.7 The father of the bridegroom had provided plenty of wine for all the guests bidden to the marriage feast, but how was he to know that the marriage of his son was to become an event so closely associated with the expected manifestation of Jesus as the Messianic deliverer? He was delighted to have the honor of numbering the celebrated Galilean among his guests, but before the wedding supper was over, the servants brought him the disconcerting news that the wine was running short. By the time the formal supper had ended, and the guests were strolling about in the garden, the mother of the bridegroom confided to Mary that the supply of wine was exhausted. And Mary confidently said: "Have no worry -- I will speak to my son. He will help us." And thus, did she presume to speak, notwithstanding the rebuke of but a few hours before.

  • 137:4.8 Throughout a period of many years, Mary had always turned to Jesus for help in every crisis of their home life at Nazareth so that it was only natural for her to think of him at this time. But this ambitious mother had still other motives for appealing to her eldest son on this occasion. As Jesus was standing alone in a corner of the garden, his mother approached him, saying, "My son, they have no wine." And Jesus answered, "My good woman, what have I to do with that?" Said Mary, "But I believe your hour has come; cannot you help us?" Jesus replied: "Again I declare that I have not come to do things in this wise. Why do you trouble me again with these matters?" And then, breaking down in tears, Mary entreated him, "But, my son, I promised them that you would help us; won't you please do something for me?" And then spoke Jesus: "Woman, what have you to do with making such promises? See that you do it not again. We must in all things wait upon the will of the Father in heaven."

  • 137:4.9 Mary the mother of Jesus was crushed; she was stunned! As she stood there before him motionless, with the tears streaming down her face, the human heart of Jesus was overcome with compassion for the woman who had borne him in the flesh; and bending forward, he laid his hand tenderly upon her head, saying: "Now, now, Mother Mary, grieve not over my apparently hard sayings, for have I not many times told you that I have come only to do the will of my heavenly Father? Most gladly would I do what you ask of me if it were a part of the Father's will --" and Jesus stopped short, he hesitated. Mary seemed to sense that something was happening. Leaping up, she threw her arms around Jesus' neck, kissed him, and rushed off to the servants' quarters, saying, "Whatever my son says, that do." But Jesus said nothing. He now realized that he had already said -- or rather desirefully thought -- too much.

  • 137:4.10 Mary was dancing with glee. She did not know how the wine would be produced, but she confidently believed that she had finally persuaded her first-born son to assert his authority, to dare to step forth and claim his position and exhibit his Messianic power. And, because of the presence and association of certain universe powers and personalities, of which all those present were wholly ignorant, she was not to be disappointed. The wine Mary desired and which Jesus, the God-man, humanly and sympathetically wished for, was forthcoming.

  • 137:4.11 Near at hand stood six waterpots of stone, filled with water, holding about twenty gallons apiece. This water was intended for subsequent use in the final purification ceremonies of the wedding celebration. The commotion of the servants about these huge stone vessels, under the busy direction of his mother, attracted Jesus' attention, and going over, he observed that they were drawing wine out of them by the pitcherful.

  • 137:4.12 It was gradually dawning upon Jesus what had happened. Of all persons present at the marriage feast of Cana, Jesus was the most surprised. Others had expected him to work a wonder, but that was just what he had purposed not to do. And then the Son of Man recalled the admonition of his Personalized Thought Adjuster in the hills. He recounted how the Adjuster had warned him about the inability of any power or personality to deprive him of the creator prerogative of independence of time. On this occasion power transformers, midwayers, and all other required personalities were assembled near the water and other necessary elements, and in the face of the expressed wish of the Universe Creator Sovereign, there was no escaping the instantaneous appearance of wine. And this occurrence was made doubly certain since the Personalized Adjuster had signified that the execution of the Son's desire was in no way a contravention of the Father's will.

  • 137:4.13 But this was in no sense a miracle. No law of nature was modified, abrogated, or even transcended. Nothing happened but the abrogation of time in association with the celestial assembly of the chemical elements requisite for the elaboration of the wine. At Cana on this occasion the agents of the Creator made wine just as they do by the ordinary natural processes except that they did it independently of time and with the intervention of superhuman agencies in the matter of the space assembly of the necessary chemical ingredients.

  • 137:4.14 Furthermore it was evident that the enactment of this so-called miracle was not contrary to the will of the Paradise Father, else it would not have transpired, since Jesus had already subjected himself in all things to the Father's will.

  • 137:4.15 When the servants drew this new wine and carried it to the best man, the "ruler of the feast," and when he had tasted it, he called to the bridegroom, saying: "It is the custom to set out first the good wine and, when the guests have well drunk, to bring forth the inferior fruit of the vine; but you have kept the best of the wine until the last of the feast."

  • 137:4.16 Mary and the disciples of Jesus were greatly rejoiced at the supposed miracle which they thought Jesus had intentionally performed, but Jesus withdrew to a sheltered nook of the garden and engaged in serious thought for a few brief moments. He finally decided that the episode was beyond his personal control under the circumstances and, not being adverse to his Father's will, was inevitable. When he returned to the people, they regarded him with awe; they all believed in him as the Messiah. But Jesus was sorely perplexed, knowing that they believed in him only because of the unusual occurrence which they had just inadvertently beheld. Again Jesus retired for a season to the housetop that he might think it all over.

  • 137:4.17 Jesus now fully comprehended that he must constantly be on guard lest his indulgence of sympathy and pity become responsible for repeated episodes of this sort. Nevertheless, many similar events occurred before the Son of Man took final leave of his mortal life in the flesh.

We see dozens of miracles in our everyday lives - being suddenly struck by the beauty of a flower, or at the body's amazing ability to heal a cut we have recently suffered.

Then there are miracles that stretch our known concepts, which we put into our neutral file until they are part of our inner experience and understanding.

The miracle of cosmic consciousness is the one we are to experience in this course.

We are asked to shed the 95.5% of our personality that is habit and begin to build the 4.5% that is free. Freedom from natural law means an in-depth knowledge of a higher law. Looking through the eyes of Spiritual Law, miracles are very logical and to be expected

The first step to learn is empathy - knowing yourself first before seeking miracles. Getting the focus off self and onto others and a higher reality - learn this lesson and the dimension of miracles is, yours for the asking.

These basic #1-2-3 techniques should be applied daily all through the course process as these constitute the required basis for all further opening of the mind and for greater understanding of self and the universe.

A precognition experience

While going on vacation to Colorado, we, my husband and I and our children, were driving across Nebraska in our camper truck with the big window at the rear of the camper open so the children could have ventilation in the back of the camper. Suddenly I turned to Jonathon, my husband and told him to stop the truck immediately and close the back window. There was no apparent reason for it, but he responded by pulling over right away as he was accustomed to my unusual requests on occasions. He got but of the truck and walked to the back to shut the window just as a huge wind started up. By the time he got the window up he had, a very difficult time walking back to the cab because of the intensity of the wind. I suggested he pull the truck behind an old cement comfort station which was at the side of the road. He did, but with difficulty because the velocity of the wind was such that it swayed the camper. All this happened within a couple of minutes. By the time we got behind the comfort station the wind was at hurricane speed and benches and garbage cans were flying all over, the place.

We were untouched and when the wind passed, we started down the road again. As we drove on we passed vehicles overturned all along the highway. We realized that a tornado had passed and if it hadn't been for my "feeling to pull over" we may very well have been overturned on the side of the road just like all the other vehicles.

  • 36:2.9 World Number Three is devoted to the conservation of life. Here various modes of life protection and preservation are studied and developed by the assistants and custodians of the Life Carrier corps. The life plans for every new world always provide for the early establishment of the life-conservation commission, consisting of custodian specialists in the expert manipulation of the basic life patterns. On Urantia there were twenty-four such custodian commissioners, two for each fundamental or parent pattern of the architectural organization of the life material. On planets such as yours the highest form of life is reproduced by a life-carrying bundle which possesses twenty-four pattern units. (And since the intellectual life grows out of, and upon the foundation of, the physical, there come into existence the four and twenty basic orders of psychic organization.)

  • 91:6.7 But the efficacy of prayer in the personal spiritual experience of the one who prays is in no way dependent on such a worshiper's intellectual understanding, philosophic acumen, social level, cultural status, or other mortal acquirements. The psychic and spiritual concomitants of the prayer of faith are immediate, personal, and experiential. There is no other technique whereby every man, regardless of all other mortal accomplishments, can so effectively and immediately approach the threshold of that realm wherein he can communicate with his Maker, where the creature contacts with the reality of the Creator, with the indwelling Thought Adjuster.

  • 100:4.2 Religious perplexities are inevitable; there can be no growth without psychic conflict and spiritual agitation. The organization of a philosophic standard of living entails considerable commotion in the philosophic realms of the mind. Loyalties are not exercised in behalf of the great, the good, the true, and the noble without a struggle. Effort is attendant upon clarification of spiritual vision and enhancement of cosmic insight. And the human intellect protests against being weaned from subsisting upon the nonspiritual energies of temporal existence. The slothful animal mind rebels at the effort required to wrestle with cosmic problem solving.

  • 100:5.2 The progression of religious growth leads from stagnation through conflict to co-ordination, from insecurity to undoubting faith, from confusion of cosmic consciousness to unification of personality, from the temporal objective to the eternal, from the bondage of fear to the liberty of divine sonship.

  • 100:5.3 It should be made clear that professions of loyalty to the supreme ideals-- the psychic, emotional, and spiritual awareness of God-consciousness--may be a natural and gradual growth or may sometimes be experienced at certain junctures, as in a crisis. The Apostle Paul experienced just such a sudden and spectacular conversion that eventful day on the Damascus road. Gautama Siddhartha had a similar experience the night he sat alone and sought to penetrate the mystery of final truth. Many others have had like experiences, and many true believers have progressed in the spirit without sudden conversion.

  • 100:5.4 Most of the spectacular phenomena associated with so-called religious conversions are entirely psychologic in nature, but now and then there do occur experiences which are also spiritual in origin. When the mental mobilization is absolutely total on any level of the psychic upreach toward spirit attainment, when there exists perfection of the human motivation of loyalties to the divine idea, then there very often occurs a sudden down-grasp of the indwelling spirit to synchronize with the concentrated and consecrated purpose of the superconscious mind of the believing mortal. And it is such experiences of unified intellectual and spiritual phenomena that constitute the conversion which consists in factors over and above purely psychologic involvement.

  • 100:5.5 But emotion alone is a false conversion; one must have faith as well as feeling. To the extent that such psychic mobilization is partial, and in so far as such human-loyalty motivation is incomplete, to that extent will the experience of conversion be a blended intellectual, emotional, and spiritual reality.

  • 108:5.6 Your transient and ever-changing emotions of joy and sorrow are in the main purely human and material reactions to your internal psychic climate and to your external material environment. Do not, therefore, look to the Adjuster for selfish consolation and mortal comfort. It is the business of the Adjuster to prepare you for the eternal adventure, to assure your survival. It is not the mission of the Mystery Monitor to smooth your ruffled feelings or to minister to your injured pride; it is the preparation of your soul for the long ascending career that engages the attention and occupies the time of the Adjuster.

  • 108:5.7 I doubt that I am able to explain to you just what the Adjusters do in your minds and for your souls. I do not know that I am fully cognizant of what is really going on in the cosmic association of a divine Monitor and a human mind. It is all somewhat of a mystery to us, not as to the plan and purpose but as to the actual mode of accomplishment. And this is just why we are confronted with such difficulty in finding an appropriate name for these supernal gifts to mortal men.

  • 108:5.8 The Thought Adjusters would like to change your feelings of fear to convictions of love and confidence; but they cannot mechanically and arbitrarily do such things; that is your task. In executing those decisions which deliver you from the fetters of fear, you literally supply the psychic fulcrum on which the Adjuster may subsequently apply a spiritual lever of uplifting and advancing illumination.

  • 108:5.9 When it comes to the sharp and well-defined conflicts between the higher and lower tendencies of the races, between what really is right or wrong (not merely what you may call right and wrong), you can depend upon it that the Adjuster will always participate in some definite and active manner in such experiences. The fact that such Adjuster activity may be unconscious to the human partner does not in the least detract from its value and reality.

  • 108:5.10 If you have a personal guardian of destiny and should fail of survival, that guardian angel must be adjudicated in order to receive vindication as to the faithful execution of her trust. But Thought Adjusters are not thus subjected to examination when their subjects fail to survive. We all know that, while an angel might possibly fall short of the perfection of ministry, Thought Adjusters work in the manner of Paradise perfection; their ministry is characterized by a flawless technique which is beyond the possibility of criticism by any being outside of Divinington. You have perfect guides; therefore is the goal of perfection certainly attainable.

  •  110:5.4 While their mortal hosts are asleep, the Adjusters try to register their creations in the higher levels of the material mind, and some of your grotesque dreams indicate their failure to make efficient contact. The absurdities of dream life not only testify to pressure of unexpressed emotions but also bear witness to the horrible distortion of the representations of the spiritual concepts presented by the Adjusters. Your own passions, urges, and other innate tendencies translate themselves into the picture and substitute their unexpressed desires for the divine messages which the indwellers are endeavoring to put into the psychic records during unconscious sleep.

  • 110:5.5 It is extremely dangerous to postulate as to the Adjuster content of the dream life. The Adjusters do work during sleep, but your ordinary dream experiences are purely physiologic and psychologic phenomena. Likewise, it is hazardous to attempt the differentiation of the Adjusters' concept registry from the more or less continuous and conscious reception of the dictations of mortal conscience. These are problems which will have to be solved through individual discrimination and personal decision. But a human being would do better to err in rejecting an Adjuster's expression through believing it to be a purely human experience than to blunder into exalting a reaction of the mortal mind to the sphere of divine dignity. Remember, the influence of a Thought Adjuster is for the most part, though not wholly, a superconscious experience.

  • 110:5.6 In varying degrees and increasingly as you ascend the psychic circles, sometimes directly, but more often indirectly, you do communicate with your Adjusters. But it is dangerous to entertain the idea that every new concept originating in the human mind is the dictation of the Adjuster. More often, in beings of your order, that which you accept as the Adjuster's voice is in reality the emanation of your own intellect. This is dangerous ground, and every human being must settle these problems for himself in accordance with his natural human wisdom and superhuman insight.

  • 110:5.7 The Adjuster of the human being through whom this communication is being made enjoys such a wide scope of activity chiefly because of this human's almost complete indifference to any outward manifestations of the Adjuster's inner presence; it is indeed fortunate that he remains consciously quite unconcerned about the entire procedure. He holds one of the highly experienced Adjusters of his day and generation, and yet his passive reaction to, and inactive concern toward, the phenomena associated with the presence in his mind of this versatile Adjuster is pronounced by the guardian of destiny to be a rare and fortuitous reaction. And all this constitutes a favorable co-ordination of influences, favorable both to the Adjuster in the higher sphere of action and to the human partner from the standpoints of health, efficiency, and tranquillity.

6. THE SEVEN PSYCHIC CIRCLES From the recent Urantia Revelations

  • 110:6.1 The sum total of personality realization on a material world is contained within the successive conquest of the seven psychic circles of mortal potentiality. Entrance upon the seventh circle marks the beginning of true human personality function. Completion of the first circle denotes the relative maturity of the mortal being. Though the traversal of the seven circles of cosmic growth does not equal fusion with the Adjuster, the mastery of these circles marks the attainment of those steps which are preliminary to Adjuster fusion.

  • 110:6.2 The Adjuster is your equal partner in the attainment of the seven circles-- the achievement of comparative mortal maturity. The Adjuster ascends the circles with you from the seventh to the first but progresses to the status of supremacy and self-activity quite independent of the active co-operation of the mortal mind.

  • 110:6.3 The psychic circles are not exclusively intellectual, neither are they wholly morontial; they have to do with personality status, mind attainment, soul growth, and Adjuster attunement. The successful traversal of these levels demands the harmonious functioning of the entire personality, not merely of some one phase thereof. The growth of the parts does not equal the true maturation of the whole; the parts really grow in proportion to the expansion of the entire self-- the whole self--material, intellectual, and spiritual.

  • 110:6.4 When the development of the intellectual nature proceeds faster than that of the spiritual, such a situation renders communication with the Thought Adjuster both difficult and dangerous. Likewise, overspiritual development tends to produce a fanatical and perverted interpretation of the spirit leadings of the divine indweller. Lack of spiritual capacity makes it very difficult to transmit to such a material intellect the spiritual truths resident in the higher superconsciousness. It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function--when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development--that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.

  • 110:6.5 The Adjusters are always near you and of you, but rarely can they speak directly, as another being, to you. Circle by circle your intellectual decisions, moral choosings, and spiritual development add to the ability of the Adjuster to function in your mind; circle by circle you thereby ascend from the lower stages of Adjuster association and mind attunement, so that the Adjuster is increasingly enabled to register his picturizations of destiny with augmenting vividness and conviction upon the evolving consciousness of this God-seeking mind-soul.

  • 110:6.6 Every decision you make either impedes or facilitates the function of the Adjuster; likewise do these very decisions determine your advancement in the circles of human achievement. It is true that the supremacy of a decision, its crisis relationship, has a great deal to do with its circle-making influence; nevertheless, numbers of decisions, frequent repetitions, persistent repetitions, are also essential to the habit-forming certainty of such reactions.

  • 110:6.7 It is difficult precisely to define the seven levels of human progression, for the reason that these levels are personal; they are variable for each individual and are apparently determined by the growth capacity of each human being. The conquest of these levels of cosmic evolution is reflected in three ways:

  • 110:6.8 1. Adjuster attunement. The spiritizing mind nears the Adjuster presence proportional to circle attainment.

  • 110:6.9 2. Soul evolution. The emergence of the morontia soul indicates the extent and depth of circle mastery.

  • 110:6.10 3. Personality reality. The degree of selfhood reality is directly determined by circle conquest. Persons become more real as they ascend from the seventh to the first level of mortal existence.

  • 110:6.11 As the circles are traversed, the child of material evolution is growing into the mature human of immortal potentiality. The shadowy reality of the embryonic nature of a seventh circler is giving way to the clearer manifestation of the emerging morontia nature of a local universe citizen.

  • 110:6.12 While it is impossible precisely to define the seven levels, or psychic circles, of human growth, it is permissible to suggest the minimum and maximum limits of these stages of maturity realization:

  • 110:6.13 The seventh circle. This level is entered when human beings develop the powers of personal choice, individual decision, moral responsibility, and the capacity for the attainment of spiritual individuality. This signifies the united function of the seven adjutant mind-spirits under the direction of the spirit of wisdom, the encircuitment of the mortal creature in the influence of the Holy Spirit, and, on Urantia, the first functioning of the Spirit of Truth, together with the reception of a Thought Adjuster in the mortal mind. Entrance upon the seventh circle constitutes a mortal creature a truly potential citizen of the local universe.

  • 110:6.14 The third circle. The Adjuster's work is much more effective after the human ascender attains the third circle and receives a personal seraphic guardian of destiny. While there is no apparent concert of effort between the Adjuster and the seraphic guardian, nonetheless there is to be observed an unmistakable improvement in all phases of cosmic achievement and spiritual development subsequent to the assignment of the personal seraphic attendant. When the third circle is attained, the Adjuster endeavors to morontiaize the mind of man during the remainder of the mortal life span, to make the remaining circles, and achieve the final stage of the divine-human association before natural death dissolves the unique partnership.

  • 110:6.15 The first circle. The Adjuster cannot, ordinarily, speak directly and immediately with you until you attain the first and final circle of progressive mortal achievement. This level represents the highest possible realization of mind-Adjuster relationship in the human experience prior to the liberation of the evolving morontia soul from the habiliments of the material body. Concerning mind, emotions, and cosmic insight, this achievement of the first psychic circle is the nearest possible approach of material mind and spirit Adjuster in human experience.

  • 110:6.16 Perhaps these psychic circles of mortal progression would be better denominated cosmic levels--actual meaning grasps and value realizations of progressive approach to the morontia consciousness of initial relationship of the evolutionary soul with the emerging Supreme Being. And it is this very relationship that makes it forever impossible fully to explain the significance of the cosmic circles to the material mind. These circle attainments are only relatively related to God-consciousness. A seventh or sixth circler can be almost as truly God-knowing--sonship conscious--as a second or first circler, but such lower circle beings are far less conscious of experiential relation to the Supreme Being, universe citizenship. The attainment of these cosmic circles will become a part of the ascenders' experience on the mansion worlds if they fail of such achievement before natural death.

  • 110:6.17 The motivation of faith makes experiential the full realization of man's sonship with God, but action, completion of decisions, is essential to the evolutionary attainment of consciousness of progressive kinship with the cosmic actuality of the Supreme Being. Faith transmutes potentials to actuals in the spiritual world, but potentials become actuals in the finite realms of the Supreme only by and through the realization of choice-experience. But choosing to do the will of God joins spiritual faith to material decisions in personality action and thus supplies a divine and spiritual fulcrum for the more effective functioning of the human and material leverage of God-hunger. Such a wise co-ordination of material and spiritual forces greatly augments both cosmic realization of the Supreme and morontia comprehension of the Paradise Deities.

  • 110:6.18 The mastery of the cosmic circles is related to the quantitative growth of the morontia soul, the comprehension of supreme meanings. But the qualitative status of this immortal soul is wholly dependent on the grasp of living faith upon the Paradise-potential fact-value that mortal man is a son of the eternal God. Therefore does a seventh circler go on to the mansion worlds to attain further quantitative realization of cosmic growth just as does a second or even a first circler.

  • 110:6.19 There is only an indirect relation between cosmic-circle attainment and actual spiritual religious experience; such attainments are reciprocal and therefore mutually beneficial. Purely spiritual development may have little to do with planetary material prosperity, but circle attainment always augments the potential of human success and mortal achievement.

  • 110:6.20 From the seventh to the third circle there occurs increased and unified action of the seven adjutant mind-spirits in the task of weaning the mortal mind from its dependence on the realities of the material life mechanisms preparatory to increased introduction to morontia levels of experience. From the third circle onward the adjutant influence progressively diminishes.

  • 110:6.21 The seven circles embrace mortal experience extending from the highest purely animal level to the lowest actual contactual morontia level of self-consciousness as a personality experience. The mastery of the first cosmic circle signalizes the attainment of premorontia mortal maturity and marks the termination of the conjoint ministry of the adjutant mind-spirits as an exclusive influence of mind action in the human personality. Beyond the first circle, mind becomes increasingly akin to the intelligence of the morontia stage of evolution, the conjoined ministry of the cosmic mind and the superadjutant endowment of the Creative Spirit of a local universe.

  • 110:6.22 The great days in the individual careers of Adjusters are: first, when the human subject breaks through into the third psychic circle, thus insuring the Monitor's self-activity and increased range of function (provided the indweller was not already self-acting); then, when the human partner attains the first psychic circle, and they are thereby enabled to intercommunicate, at least to some degree; and last, when they are finally and eternally fused.
