Instructions to the Teacher

The purpose of this lesson is to establish a habit within the student to be conscious of those thinking patterns that are out of harmony with the truth, beauty and goodness that is forthcoming from one who hears the voice of the Father through the Son.  Our Master said "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul? What would a man give in exchange for eternal life?

For those who would lead the way, as the Father's Ambassadors and our Master's Apostles His advice while here in the flesh to these men of old, was to spend three hours a day in preparation for the work of the Kingdom. As an Apostle for this day and generation I advise one hour of this time would be wisely spent in the technique of approach revealed in these courses.

EXERCISE

1. Students make up a Time-Pie for balance.

2. They meditate on the concept of glorification.

Students may make a list or Time-Pie of all the different life experiences that they have had in their life: travel, sports, housekeeping, sewing, fishing, etc. Then with their new Time-Pie they can actualize something new. (Ex: Music, typing, new life skills)

DISCUSSION

Glorification Night: Think up some thing glorious and fun, the idea will arise out of the group mind.

Urantia Revelation Quotes

LESSON on Taking honest Stock of the Human Soul

  •   143:2.1  The Master was a perfected specimen of human self-control. When he was reviled, he reviled not; when he suffered, he uttered no threats against his tormentors; when he was denounced by his enemies, he simply committed himself to the righteous judgment of the Father in heaven.

  •   143:2.2   At one of the evening conferences, Andrew asked Jesus: "Master, are we to practice self-denial as John taught us, or are we to strive for the self-control of your teaching? Wherein does your teaching differ from that of John?" Jesus answered: "John indeed taught you the way of righteousness in accordance with the light and laws of his fathers, and that was the religion of self-examination and self-denial. But I come with a new message of self-forgetfulness and self-control. I show to you the way of life as revealed to me by my Father in heaven.

  •   143:2.3   "Verily, verily, I say to you, he who rules his own self is greater than he who captures a city. Self-mastery is the measure of man's moral nature and the indicator of his spiritual development. In the old order you fasted and prayed as the new creature of the rebirth of the spirit, you are taught to believe and rejoice. In the Father's kingdom you are to become new creatures; old things are to pass away; behold I show you how all things are to become new. And by your love for one another you are to convince the world that you have passed from bondage to liberty, from death into life everlasting.

  •   143:2.4   "By the old way you seek to suppress, obey, and conform to the rules of living; by the new way you are first transformed by the Spirit of Truth and thereby strengthened in your inner soul by the constant spiritual renewing of your mind, and so are you endowed with the power of the certain and joyous performance of the gracious, acceptable, and perfect will of God. Forget not-- it is your personal faith in the exceedingly great and precious promises of God that ensures your becoming partakers of the divine nature. Thus by your faith and the spirit's transformation, you become in reality the temples of God, and his spirit actually dwells within you. If, then, the spirit dwells within you, you are no longer bondslaves of the flesh but free and liberated sons of the spirit. The new law of the spirit endows you with the liberty of self-mastery in place of the old law of the fear of self-bondage and the slavery of self-denial.

  •   143:2.5   "Many times, when you have done evil, you have thought to charge up your acts to the influence of the evil one when in reality you have but been led astray by your own natural tendencies. Did not the Prophet Jeremiah long ago tell you that the human heart is deceitful above all things and sometimes even desperately wicked? How easy for you to become self-deceived and thereby fall into foolish fears, divers lusts, enslaving pleasures, malice, envy, and even vengeful hatred!

  •   143:2.6   "Salvation is by the regeneration of the spirit and not by the self-righteous deeds of the flesh. You are justified by faith and fellowshipped by grace, not by fear and the self-denial of the flesh, albeit the Father's children who have been born of the spirit are ever and always masters of the self and all that pertains to the desires of the flesh. When you know that you are saved by faith, you have real peace with God. And all who follow in the way of this heavenly peace are destined to be sanctified to the eternal service of the ever-advancing sons of the eternal God. Henceforth, it is not a duty but rather your exalted privilege to cleanse yourselves from all evils of mind and body while you seek for perfection in the love of God.

  •   143:2.7   "Your sonship is grounded in faith, and you are to remain unmoved by fear. Your joy is born of trust in the divine word, and you shall not therefore be led to doubt the reality of the Father's love and mercy. It is the very goodness of God that leads men into true and genuine repentance. Your secret of the mastery of self is bound up with your faith in the indwelling spirit, which ever works by love. Even this saving faith you have not of yourselves; it also is the gift of God. And if you are the children of this living faith, you are no longer the bondslaves of self but rather the triumphant masters of yourselves, the liberated sons of God.

  •   143:2.8   "If, then, my children, you are born of the spirit, you are forever delivered from the self-conscious bondage of a life of self-denial and watchcare over the desires of the flesh, and you are translated into the joyous kingdom of the spirit, whence you spontaneously show forth the fruits of the spirit in your daily lives; and the fruits of the spirit are the essence of the highest type of enjoyable and ennobling self-control, even the heights of terrestrial mortal attainment--true self-mastery.

  •   2:7.11   All truth--material, philosophic, or spiritual--is both beautiful and good. All real beauty--material art or spiritual symmetry--is both true and good. All genuine goodness--whether personal morality, social equity, or divine ministry-- is equally true and beautiful. Health, sanity, and happiness are integrations of truth, beauty, and goodness as they are blended in human experience. Such levels of efficient living come about through the unification of energy systems, idea systems, and spirit systems.

  •   2:7.12   Truth is coherent, beauty attractive, goodness stabilizing. And when these values of that which is real are co-ordinated in personality experience, the result is a high order of love conditioned by wisdom and qualified by loyalty. The real purpose of all universe education is to effect the better co-ordination of the isolated child of the worlds with the larger realities of his expanding experience. Reality is finite on the human level, infinite and eternal on the higher and divine levels.""

  •   12:7.13   "Even though the Paradise Father functions through his divine creators and his creature children, he also enjoys the most intimate inner contact with you, so sublime, so highly personal, that it is even beyond my comprehension--that mysterious communion of the Father fragment with the human soul and with the mortal mind of its actual indwelling. Knowing what you do of these gifts of God, you therefore know that the Father is in intimate touch, not only with his divine associates, but also with his evolutionary mortal children of time. The Father indeed abides on Paradise, but his divine presence also dwells in the minds of men.

  •   12:7.14Even though the spirit of a Son be poured out upon all flesh, even though a Son once dwelt with you in the likeness of mortal flesh, even though the seraphim personally guard and guide you, how can any of these divine beings of the Second and Third Centers ever hope to come as near to you or to understand you as fully as the Father, who has given a part of himself to be in you, to be your real and divine, even your eternal, self?

  •    110:2.1  "When Thought Adjusters indwell human minds, they bring with them the model careers, the ideal lives, as determined and foreordained by themselves and the Personalized Adjusters of Divinington, which have been certified by the Personalized Adjuster of Urantia. (Earth is Urantia) Thus they begin work with a definite and predetermined plan for the intellectual and spiritual development of their human subjects, but it is not incumbent upon any human being to accept this plan. You are all subjects of predestination, but it is not foreordained that you must accept this divine predestination; you are at full liberty to reject any part or all of the Thought Adjuster's program. It is their mission to effect such mind changes and to make such spiritual adjustments as you may willingly and intelligently authorize, to the end that they may gain more influence over the personality directionization; but under no circumstances do these divine Monitors ever take advantage of you or in any way arbitrarily influence you in your choices and decisions. The Adjusters respect your sovereignty of personality; they are always subservient to your will".

  •   156:5.2   "Build well the foundations for the growth of a noble character of spiritual endowments," he said: "In order to yield the fruits of the spirit, you must be born of the spirit. You must be taught by the spirit and be led by the spirit if you would live the spirit-filled life among your fellows. But do not make the mistake of the foolish carpenter who wastes valuable time squaring, measuring, and smoothing his worm-eaten and inwardly rotting timber and then, when he has thus bestowed all of his labor upon the unsound beam, must reject it as unfit to enter into the foundations of the building which he would construct to withstand the assaults of time and storm. Let every man make sure that the intellectual and moral foundations of character are such as will adequately support the superstructure of the enlarging and ennobling spiritual nature, which is thus to transform the mortal mind and then, in association with that re-created mind, is to achieve the evolvement of the soul of immortal destiny. Your spirit nature--the jointly created soul--is a living growth, but the mind and morals of the individual are the soil from which these higher manifestations of human development and divine destiny must spring. The soil of the evolving soul is human and material, but the destiny of this combined creature of mind and spirit is spiritual and divine."

For the purpose of this course we will call these model careers and ideal lives our Divine Principles.

JACOB'S LADDER

UB131:7.3"`Every time man yields to anxiety, he takes one step away from the leading of the spirit of his heart.' Pride obscures God. If you would obtain heavenly help, put away your pride; every hair of pride shuts off saving light, as it were, by a great cloud. If you are not right on the inside, it is useless to pray for that which is on the outside. `If I hear your prayers, it is because you come before me with a clean heart, free from falsehood and hypocrisy, with a soul which reflects truth like a mirror. If you would gain immortality, forsake the world and come to me.'"

THE INNER VOYAGE

UNIT 9: PERSONAL ASSESSMENT - Taking honest stock of the human soul, and the material mind.

Lesson Content

You can use the technique taught in the first part of this course to get anything you really want out of life. You can become the person you have always wished you could be. The only thing that can stop you is you. The old you. The old programmed ideas of who and what you think you are.

This Lesson will show you how to evaluate your true potential. Once you know that, you have a bull's eye to aim for a destination to head towards.

  • 132:2.4 The spiritually blind individual who logically follows scientific dictation, social usage, and religious dogma stands in grave danger of sacrificing his moral freedom and losing his spiritual liberty. Such a soul is destined to become an intellectual parrot, a social automaton, and a slave to religious authority.

WHICH ONE IS THE BEST?

A purebred German shepherd dog - bred to a purebred German shepherd dog had three identical pups.

The first pup is bought by a prison guard and was trained to become a guard dog, to stop prisoners escaping - to kill if necessary.

The second pup is bought as a guide dog for a blind man to become his eyes.

The third pup is bought by a man with a family and becomes the children's pet.

Which, in your opinion is the best dog, and why?

Jot down your answer on a sheet of paper!

The PRINCE and the ROBBER

Now another story, from pages 45 and 46 in the book METAPHYSICS, WHAT IS IT? (by Winifred Grace Barton).

Many years ago, there lived a King and Queen who had identical twin sons, William and Charles. Away in the woods lived a robber who hated the King -- so he stole into the palace the night the babies were born and took little Prince Charles off into the forest.

The King and Queen are sick with grief, but finally pour all their love and attention onto little Prince William, who is given the best possible care and education and grows up to be exactly like his parents.

Meanwhile, little Charlie is taught all the fine cunning of stealing, killing and generally making a villain of himself. The only time he breaks down is one night when he spares the life of an old man he has robbed - as a matter of fact this brings about his ruination, as the old man identifies him, and Charlie gets caught and is hanged.

The same night Willie falls from his horse and gets killed. So both men arrive at the gates of heaven at the same time.

Who gets in first? In other words, who is accounted as the best person, in terms of an active psi or soul?

Write down your choice and explain it.

Now - Let's go back to the first question: Which is the best dog?

The answer is: All of them! Each dog was only doing what he was programmed to do. All three are equal in worthiness.

How about the princes? Who did you think should get through the gates of heaven first?

The answer is that Charlie, the robber, would be the first one.

This is why.

Remember in the story we are told that Willie grows up in a very fortunate environment. He was a "good" prince who grew up to be just like his parents. But he remained merely a product of his genetics and environment. On the other hand, Charlie rose above his programming - even, if only once. Moral fruits are not spiritual fruits, one is the acceptance of what is, the other is the revelation of what can be. One is progressive the other non active in increasing the spiritual capacity of each day and passing generation.

It is in overcoming our programming that we can achieve the "Crown Of Life".

Let's look further to understand why it is not enough for us to merely adhere to our programming, even if it was "good" by the standards of man.

UB Quote 102:7.04 "True, many apparently religious traits can grow out of nonreligious roots. Man can, intellectually, deny God and yet be morally good, loyal, filial, honest, and even idealistic. Man may graft many purely humanistic branches onto his basic spiritual nature and thus apparently prove his contentions in behalf of a godless religion, but such an experience is devoid of survival values, God-knowingness and God-ascension. In such a mortal experience only social fruits are forthcoming, not spiritual. The graft determines the nature of the fruit, notwithstanding that the living sustenance is drawn from the roots of original divine endowment of both mind and spirit."

I.Q.: ANIMAL CUNNING

Every human being is unique. Our physical assets are largely controlled by two factors;

1. Genetics - Qualities inherited from our parents and ancestors, i.e. (color of our hair, skin and eyes, talent for music, sports etc. Our intelligence potential)

2. Environment - this includes the family background, culture, educational opportunities and country we were born in.

What is your genetic inheritance? What kinds of talents were passed on to you from your parents and your family tree in general?

What kind of an environment were you brought up in? How much opportunity did you have to develop your talents?

Reflect on this for a few minutes.

Now, let's take a look at the factor of I.Q. (Intelligence Quotient).

I .Q. measures the crude animal cunning of which an individual is capable. It is mostly concerned with the speed at which a brain can absorb and retrieve information.

In many societies a lot of importance is given to I.Q. We forget that it does not in any way reflect the depth and breadth of an individual's thoughts, real values or insights concerning truth, beauty or goodness.

We also tend to forget that I.Q. is not a guarantee of happiness or success. As a matter of fact, the opposite is often true.

In the above-mentioned book, there is a description of a study done on members of M E N S A (an organization comprising of the top 2% of I.Q. ratings in the world.) These mental giants fully agree with the above statement. Few of them held responsible positions. Few were able to maintain an effective triune emotional balance, of body, mind and spirit.

One member of this group had used his high I .Q. to figure out nearly three hundred ways to get back at an individual who had treated him badly without that individual ever discovering from where all his misfortune was coming! This sounds like something out of a science fiction story, yet it is a true example of how intellect can become uncontrollable, if too much importance is attached to it. Again, balance is a key factor. Considering life originates in spirit is organized in mind and manifest in the material world, this type of psychic force is the cause of many unkind and unloving realities in human experience.

After all, genetic inheritance, body-mind potentials and beauty are purely accidental and nothing to be proud of in itself. If another one of the millions of sperm had won, the race you might have been a different person altogether. It's something to think about.

Environment, too, depends on the luck of the draw. Remember Willie and Charlie? They had a similar genetic inheritance, but they were raised in entirely different sets of cultural circumstances.

Good education and positive programming give us the confidence for fullest development of our basic talents, only when governed by the indwelling divine monitor.

MEASURING TALENTS

Now that you have given some thought to your genetic inheritance, and the environmental opportunities you have had, you are ready to begin to assess your talents.

Visualize three containers that represent our inherited gifts, and their development through environment, (keep in mind that if you were born in a well-developed country, this is part of a fortunate environment). We will use a gallon measure, a cupful, and a teaspoonful to illustrate physical attributes.

GALLON                                               CUP                               TEASPOON

Which container do you think is best representative of you?

The person with a gallon measure of talent can be truly proud when he or she knows that this capacity has been developed fully and put to service in the Master's work - the only possible reason for wanting personal development. A student with a comparative cupful of assets need only shoulder a cupful of human responsibility.

Of course, the gallon, cupful and teaspoonful measures are theoretical. Every single person is unique. A starving child in India, for example, however intelligent, would be less "wealthy" in personal assets because of a crushing environment, and need have no fear of celestial indignation if he contributes little to human welfare.

The person with a gallon measure might pick up 1000 impressions per second, the cupful person 100 impressions and the teaspoonful person 10 impressions per second. But if these are wrongly filed (due to a misfiring emotional mechanism), the spoonful is just as likely to know truth as the gallon measure.

Here is an example to illustrate. A brother and sister were playing with a kitten. The boy was older and very bright. He could be said to have a gallon measure of talent. The girl was slightly mentally-challenged - she would be a teaspoon person. The boy began to play so roughly with the kitten he was hurting it. It was his slower-thinking sister who told him what he was doing was wrong and took the cat away.

YOUR PENDULUM

Imagine your emotional balance as a pendulum. It can swing from extreme like to dislike

.

LIKESympathyAffectionEMOTIONAL STABILITYAntipathyAversioDISLIKE

The average person tends to swing from one pole to another. Likes and dislikes are the real robbers of vim, vigor and vitality. Let's take the example of the housewife who doesn't like to wash the floors, so she keeps putting it off to another day. The mental energy wasted in procrastination far exceeds the physical energy needed to do this simple task. This is a situation where mind control leading to true self mastery becomes especially important. Without it, your likes and dislikes will keep you swinging constantly, reducing mental efficiency. And each swing consumes energy, radiating into the aura in a confused mass of colours throughout the waking day.

There is another aspect to the swinging pendulum You have probably noticed it in yourself especially since you began this course. It is caused by the focus of attention switching from personal cause, based on self-centered interests to a Greater Cause (empathy, & concern for all about you - global citizenship).

Intellect is always fearful that if the focus of attention is set on something other than personal goals ID is going to lose out. So, it tries again and again to refocus attention towards self.

It works something like this. As your psi-light or soul grows in wattage you feel more and more in tune with nature and the world about you. You feel terrific. You just want to share yourself. Later, when you discover a facet of your personality which is not pleasing to ego's self-image, ego says, "This Jacob's Ladder Inner Voyage is digging up things we don't like to look at. Why not stop using all of the techniques." The pendulum swings violently. At this point you may feel discouraged. It is not unusual for weaker truth-seeking ones to withdraw from the course at this time.

SAMUEL AND SAUL

Samuel was a young boy whose life had been promised to the Temple by his mother. One night, while he was asleep, he heard his name called. He ran and asked Eli, the chief priest if he had called him. The old man said no. When this had happened three times in the same night, Samuel, at Eli's suggestion, surrendered to God with these words: "Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth."

Saul was a young tentmaker. A Jew from Tarsus, he took every opportunity to persecute Christians. One day, on the road to Tarsus Saul was struck from his horse by a "blinding flash" from heaven. Thereafter he became "Paul," one of the most devout of Christ' s apostles.

100:5.3  "It should be made clear that professions of loyalty to the supreme ideals-- the psychic, emotional, and spiritual awareness of God-consciousness--may be a natural and gradual growth or may sometimes be experienced at certain junctures, as in a crisis. The Apostle Paul experienced just such a sudden and spectacular conversion that eventful day on the Damascus road. Gautama Siddhartha had a similar experience the night he sat alone and sought to penetrate the mystery of final truth. Many others have had like experiences, and many true believers have progressed in the spirit without sudden conversion.

100:5.4 Most of the spectacular phenomena associated with so-called religious conversions are entirely psychologic in nature, but now and then there do occur experiences which are also spiritual in origin. When the mental mobilization is absolutely total on any level of the psychic upreach toward spirit attainment, when there exists perfection of the human motivation of loyalties to the divine idea, then there very often occurs a sudden down-grasp of the indwelling spirit to synchronize with the concentrated and consecrated purpose of the superconscious mind of the believing mortal. And it is such experiences of unified intellectual and spiritual phenomena that constitute the conversion which consists in factors over and above purely psychologic involvement."

The Samuels have a quieter, more prolonged Armageddon (battle with self-will). "Saul" types have a shorter, more violent struggle with self.

Which personality type are you most like?

Are you the type of person who resists changes until the last minute and then never go back on your decision or is your progress more gradual and confident?

As you have proceeded with this course you may by now have realized how important it is to forgive others for past insults and injuries you have received from them. It is equally important to forgive yourself for errors you have made in the past.

"Learn, baby, learn" is a useful motto to adopt.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Take the subject matter of the course seriously - but learn to take yourself lightly.

YOUR MYSTERIOUS NUMBER

Up to this point we have seen that we all have inherited gifts, different kinds of talents. How well they were developed depended upon how favorable our environment was. We learned that the more talents we have, the more responsible we are for using them to make the world a better place for all to live in.

Now we will discuss the steps you can take to discover what your real potential is, the ULTIMATE YOU, and where you are in your development right now.

As no two people start out on exactly the same level of enlightenment, we have to find a common denominator for analysis purposes:

  • 1. First try to make an honest estimate of your ULTIMATE YOU - that self which would be you if all faculties were fully developed. We will call this point 100% or the dawn of self-mastery.

  • 2. Try to see yourself as you were when starting this course calling this point a number between 0% and 100%. Now calculate the figure between 0% and 100%, which you honestly think represents your present stage of development as your exam mark.

  • 3. Review previous lessons asking yourself these questions: - did I manage to dig down to the very origin of my preconceived ideas? - did dreams illuminate memory permitting additional flashes of insight. Did I gain daily strength in meditation emerging from this rendez-vous with Spirit feeling uplifted, radiating wondrous vibrations? Did I gain mind control, perspective and extra-sensory powers almost daily as the course proceeded? Consider these points. Probe and process data. Give yourself a percentage between 0% to 100% of the application so far and subtract this number from your starting point.

  • 4. That's one way of doing it. Then there is another way of doing it. Very politely and with deepest humility ask your guide if he or she will please work out the whole thing, then give you the answer. If you have learned powerful prayer techniques, faith, submission, aura development, all of which go hand in hand, this is an excellent test to prove that little voice in your head is indeed of independent thought.

  •  5. Often the figure given by the guide will be quite different from the one your conscious mind selects.

But scores of students can testify to these results -- ASK --then keep an open mind. Within a few days a number between zero and one hundred should start buzzing through your head or crop up by some other mysterious means (for Spirit is very versatile), let the angelic host working with the material manipulations of world events and the all seeing spirit of the divine monitor be your guardians and pilot .The main thing is to keep pushing towards that 100% ULTIMATE YOU figure, the number of self mastery.

In this Lesson we have seen that:

  • 1. Programming does not make us any more or less deserving than someone else.

  • 2. Re-evaluation of each piece of our programming is necessary.

  • 3. I.Q. is just a measure of animal cunning and has little to do with happiness.

  • 4. We're each responsible for our own measure of talents.

  • 5. Our emotional swings can be reduced through mind control.

  • 6. We can have a short turbulent "Armageddon" like Paul or a longer quiet one like Samuel.

  • 7. We've only just begun and our guides can tell us where we stand in relation to our maximum potential.

FEEDBACK SHEET

UNIT 9: PERSONAL ASSESSMENT

  • 1. Do you feel you have been positively or negatively programmed Why?

  • 2. Do you consider that you have inherited a gallon, a cup or a teaspoon of potential? Why?

  • 3. Have you experienced a lot of pendulum swinging How do you feel about it?

  • 4. Are you a Samuel or a Saul like personality?

  • 5. Did you get your mysterious number? Are you pleased with it?

Personal Assessment Story

I was at a point in my life when I felt satisfied with who I was and what I had. Things were going well for me and the way I was investing my energy seemed to bring good results.

The first time I received this lesson on Personal Assessment and was asked to assess my energy output in comparison to my maximum potential I felt confident in putting a good average of 80%. I knew I could do more, but at the time I was content with my performance.

Then part of the exercise was to meditate on receiving and seeing clearly our percentage of how much we used our potential. To my surprise I got the number 3%. I could not accept this so I pushed the thoughts away and kept on going. Then one day I looked at the calendar to find out the day's date and it was the Third of the month and somehow the number had been circled with a red felt pencil. It caught my attention but again I did not face it. The following week I took the Personal Assessment again and the teacher gave us an example of someone using only 3% of their potential.

Well, that did it to me. Three times three was too much of a coincidence. After I accepted the fact and faced the reality of how little I was using my potential, I started to think about it and it discouraged me somehow.

Later on that week it dawned on me that if I felt satisfied or good about myself when I was actually using only 3% of my potential, then how much more satisfaction I would get if I had reached my 100%!

I realized that the lesson and the experience of discovering my percentage had brought a totally new scale of value to my involve-ment in life as well as to my desire to grow.

Remember to daily practice the 1  2 and 3 Lessons Techniques

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees

and the stars, you have a right to be here.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.  As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.  Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.  If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.  Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.  Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.  But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself.  Especially, do not feign affection.  Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.  Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.  But do not distress yourself with  imaginings; many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.  You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.  And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whoever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.  With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.  Be cheerful.  Strive to be happy.
